Day 10 – a magnificent breakfast visitor, the tranquil spice garden and meeting up with Suzana

During breakfast this morning a very large Elephant sauntered past just a few meters away which created a bit of stir amongst the hotel guests. Gill managed to catch him on video.

On our way from Habarana to Kandy we stopped at Dambulla briefly to see the long line of bright orange statue monks.

Spice Garden

It was a spice garden in Matale where we were introduced to many therapeutic herbs and spices and told how they can support our health and well being. Gill bought some turmeric, coco powder and vanilla essence which can be used as a healthy alternative to sugar in tea. We were then treated to a much appreciated leg massage with some special oils.

As we drove into Kandy town we bought stationery and confectionary from the iconic Arpico store to take to the children in the village we’re visiting tomorrow. We have so much stuff to distribute which has been donated from the UK and Romania, including 200 pairs of glasses, children’s school bags, stationery items, medications and children’s clothes.

Meeting Suzana

The highlight of the day for me was meeting up with my friend Suzana from Romania in our little guest house just outside of Kandy where we’ll stay for 3 nights. This was followed by a tasty supper for us three at a local Dosa cafe and a wander around the moonlit, glistening lake.

Krys will arrive tomorrow evening from London for her volunteering stint in the shelter as we three depart to trek a small part of the 300km Pekoe Trail in the central highlands over 3 days.
