Blog 3 – trekking from Ahangama to Makuludola Estate, Dampella

There was a heavy and noisy storm last night and it was still raining this morning when we woke but even still the air remained thick and humid. We managed to trek another 14km today and whilst it doesn’t sound much you can probably double it or at least half it again if walking in a cooler temperature.

Taking a rest around half way – flagging at this point

The Bungalow

The Bungalow, where we arrived around lunchtime, is on the top of a hill in a thriving cinnamon and rubber plantation which overlooks vast expanses of paddy fields. Interestingly it was designed by an associate of the late iconic Sri Lankan architect, Geoffrey Bawa.

The cinnamon ‘factory’ just 300 metres away was not quite what Gill expected! It was the size of a few garages put together with men responsible for different parts of an intricate process. We both got to try out carving the wood in the cinnamon aroma-filled shack.

STOP PRESS – National Sri Lankan news

Our trek was mentioned on the national Sri Lanka’s news channel yesterday giving our fundraising full coverage. We can’t understand what it says as it’s in Sinhala but feedback from Sri Lankan friends said its great. English translation to follow in next few days.

Evening meander around the estate

To finish our day, before a gorgeous homemade curry supper, we had a meander around the estate.
