Blog 5 – Kilinochchi

Trekking

Not an early enough start today so it got far too hot far too quickly and we only managed to trek 9km. It’s been so hot and it becomes unbearable when we start melting and getting headaches although we’re drinking gallons of water. On the upside our feet are bearing up well.

Iranamadu Tank

We reached Kilinochchi and sought out Iranamadu tank and dam in readiness this time for the midday sun! We could only bear being out in it for 20 minutes but snapped a few photos and got to see the dam up very close. This I imagine is a civil engineer’s dream. It’s a huge construction feat and the way the Sri Lankans have control over their water collection and distribution is astonishing. Refer to my planning blog if interested in the ancient Sri Lankan irrigation system which is still used today.

On to Mullaitivu

There wasn’t much to see in Kilinochchi and the accommodation we had booked wasn’t up to scratch so we decided to move on and found a remote place on the coast where we’re staying for a couple of nights. We’ll go back on ourselves a bit tomorrow to explore Mullaitivu, a fishing settlement and interestingly where many of the LTTE leaders came from and the site of a land-based battle in 1996. More on this tomorrow.
