March 2023 – And we’re off . . .

Hatton Station on the way to Ella just after climbing Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak)

There’s been a few changes since last month’s update: Gill can’t come now but Kiran can, for most of it anyway, and for all of the trekking part. As a result I’ve tweaked the schedule but essentially it’s the same route i.e. from Kandy where Gill and I completed Stage 1 last year, to Trincomalee right over on the North East coast. This time Kiran and I will trek from where the blue pins in the centre of the map start, to the end of the yellow pins and before the black ones start – see below.

Part of the route planned for Stage 2 – Kandy to Polonnaruwa

Fundraising update

Just one more fundraising activity this month before we leave, but I still have a way to go to meet my £20,000 target. I’m at 91% now with just £1,725,00 to go as of 3rd March. If you’d like to help us reach it by the time we get back to the UK on 12th April then please click on our fundraising link here. And please don’t forget to follow our daily blogs whilst trekking (from 28th March) and comment on some of them :). It was so lovely last year to see your comments and know you were with us in spirit.

In the last month my work colleagues have donated hundreds of pairs of spectacle frames, some of which I can take with me in my suitcase and the others I’ll have couriered out as there are so many. Thank you to everyone who donated these – the lens prescriptions will be checked by an optician in a village in Kurunegala and distributed to all those who need them. As the suitcases are almost full with donated goods, it’s really financial donations we need which will be used to buy items such as powdered baby milk, stationery, medicine in pharmacies and shops in situ. This way we put money into the Sri Lankan economy – it’s the best way wherever possible.

A useless piece of information

Delighted to have found this today which was shot on location in Sri Lanka 40 years ago. You’ll love it if you’re into 80s music – I did, although it feels a bit random!

If you missed last month’s blog then here it is.

Further sponsorship – if you’d like to help me to help those in need in Sri Lanka at this difficult time, whilst being assured every penny will go to those who need it, then please donate by clicking on this link. Don’t forget that if you’re a tax payer to declare gift aid when doing so which will increase your donation by 25% at no cost to you. Alternatively, if you know of anyone or any organisation who may have an interest in this cause please share this blog link with them
