About Me – Marcia Summers

For almost 30 years, I worked in the further education sector, culminating my career as Assistant Principal at a London college in April 2024.

I now have more time to enjoy travelling to unique destinations and then writing about the places, experiences and people I encounter along the way. Volunteering is a rewarding part of my life. I use my skills to help improve the life chances of girls and women affected by gender-based violence, as well as children impacted by poverty in Sri Lanka. Closer to home in the UK, I volunteer with Surrey Care Trust, mentoring young people at risk of entering the criminal justice system and supporting parents navigating those challenges.

For more insight into how my journey of volunteering in Sri Lanka began, take a look at my article, The holiday that changed things This story is central to my current mission – trekking across Sri Lanka to raise funds for vital projects.

I hope you enjoy reading my blogs. If they resonate with you, keep an eye out for my forthcoming book, Trekking Sri Lanka: From Galle in the South to the Island’s Northernmost Tip, the proceeds from sales made in Sri Lanka will go directly to supporting the ongoing projects there.

Please see my article for the background on how I initially became involved in volunteering in Sri Lanka as this is key to my current fundraising i.e. trekking across Sri Lanka.

As I update this page in August 2024, I’ve visited Sri Lanka ten times. It should have been more but in 2019 this was prevented by the devastating Easter terrorist attacks across the island, and our flights were cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

I hope you enjoy reading blogs. If you felt inspired by them then maybe you’d like to read by forthcoming book: Trekking Sri Lanka: More Than a Travel Guide. All proceeds of sales in Sri Lanka will go to support the projects I support there.
