Blog 5 – from Morawaka to Unawatawa National Park

Today was all about the elephants!

The baby elephants were hand fed milk powder

We set off early this morning to beat the worst of the day’s heat which reached 34 degrees! We stopped at an amazing roadside cafe with the most fabulous banana milkshake we’d both ever had. In fact it was so good we treated ourselves to another one and guzzled it down with some pineapple bread. We wanted to get the trek part finished by 11am so we could reach our destination of Udawalawa where we were picked up for an afternoon safari.

We arrived at Udawalawa National Park in time to see baby elephants and the bigger ones being fed. It was very amusing and quite emotional watching them all arrive and rush to the feeding area to have their milk. The tiny ones were hand-fed separately by the keepers. We also saw two crocodiles, a wild boar, water buffalo, peacocks, monkeys and beautiful, brightly coloured birds.

Whilst you may have heard that Sri Lanka travel advice changed today, alerting travellers to the deterioration in the economic situation in Sri Lanka and the possibility of further local curfews over the next few days, as tourists we’ve come across no problems at all. We’ve found everyone we’ve come across to be extremely warm and hospitable and the troubles they’re currently facing has in no way affected how they’re interacting with us as tourists.

‘Their Future Today’ professional photographs arrived

The professional photographs taken on Tuesday, the day we set off from Galle with TFT Country Director, their Project Manager and local students came through today.

Glad you managed to fit in a visit to the elephant/animal sanctuary, much needed funds to keep the place running which the sanctuary must be feeling the pinch with low visitor numbers😞… I went to a sloth sanctuary in Selvatura Forest in Monteverde which relies on public funds too .
Wonderful that you’re welcomed by the lovely Sri Lankan people and you’ve got some great local guides especially during these troubled times !
    Enjoying your blogs 👍🏼
